work
hybrid human-agent tutoring technology
context
High-dosage tutoring is effective, however, it is difficult to implement with quality at scale.
CU Boulder received a multi-million dollar, five-year grant to address this challenge.
action
My team and I partnered with a nationally-recognized tutoring service provider to design, implement, and study a hybrid human-AI technology solution.
impact
We’ve launched an AI feedback system for novice tutors and our preliminary research has shown that this technology is helping improve tutor discourse.
degree completion program
context
Some students start at CU Boulder and leave without completing their degrees.
CU Boulder received a $3.1 million, five-year grant to reenroll and support these students through to graduation.
action
My team and I developed the Finish What You Started program aimed at helping Colorado residents and previous CU students come back and finish their degrees through financial support and wrap-around services.
impact
We’ve reenrolled 100+ CU students, awarded millions of dollars in scholarships and financial assistance, and provided high-touch coaching, academic and career advising. 80+ students have graduated (and counting).
student success action
context
CU Boulder announced a goal to reach a 90%+ first-year retention rate.
We had an opportunity to coordinate on using data to identify students with need and proactively provide support.
action
My team and I designed data products (such as a predictive retention model and dashboard) and processes to help campus groups collaborate to provide student success outreach and support.
impact
Through student success data products and processes to coordination on communication and action, we launched several personalized interventions and helped improve student academic success and retention.
data self-service
context
CU Boulder announced a goal of being data-informed.
A challenge, however, was that data and reports were hard to access and use.
action
My team and I designed and implemented a data self-service with a modern experience and using a modern infrastructure.
impact
We improved data access and use for regular data users and university leadership.
student portal
context
The online student experience was fragmented.
CU Boulder set out to design a new student portal and to unify the online student experience.
action
Using design thinking and user experience methods, my team and I collected various data and input to inform the new student portal design.
impact
Through this work, we identified a new design, improved on key experience metrics, and launched a user-centered design culture.
hybrid learning experiences
context
In 2010, The Ed Psyc & Ed Tech program cohort at MSU included both in-person and online students. The department wanted to study and implement synchronous learning experiences for both.
action
My team and I collaborated with faculty, partnered with students, and experimented with technologies to design online experiences that are comparable to those in person.
impact
We designed synchronous learning experiences that matched the course pedagogy, implemented a technology navigator program, researched and published about this in peer journals and conferences.
